First-Party Data

First-party data is information a company collects directly from its own customers and visitors, such as website behaviour, CRM records and newsletter sign-ups.

What is first-party data?

First-party data is information a company collects directly from its own audience: website and app behaviour, purchases, CRM records, form submissions, newsletter sign-ups and customer service interactions. It differs from third-party data, which is bought from or collected by outside providers, and from zero-party data, which customers share deliberately, such as preferences in a survey.

Why it has become so important:

  • Privacy and browsers: Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies by default, and privacy laws such as the GDPR restrict data sharing. First-party data is more reliable and more under your control.
  • AI-driven advertising: platforms rely on your data to find the right people and bid well. Customer Match, enhanced conversions and offline conversion import all feed first-party data into Google Ads.
  • Better measurement: CRM data shows which campaigns produce real customers, not just clicks.

How to build a strong first-party data foundation:

  • Collect data with a clear purpose and a proper legal basis, documented in your privacy policy.
  • Use server-side tagging and Consent Mode for reliable, compliant tracking.
  • Connect website, CRM and ad platforms, and keep data clean and deduplicated.

For international businesses, consent rates, legal requirements and data storage rules differ by market, so plan the setup per region rather than copying one country’s approach everywhere.
