Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means optimizing content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools use it as the direct answer to a question.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content so that “answer engines” – search features, voice assistants and AI tools – use it as the direct answer to a user’s question. The term first became popular with featured snippets and voice search, and is now mostly used for AI answers in tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews.

AEO overlaps almost completely with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Both aim for visibility inside the answer rather than a click on a results list. If there is a difference, AEO focuses on answering specific questions well, while GEO also covers brand visibility and brand mentions across AI platforms. Google has said that optimizing for its own AI features is simply part of SEO, not a separate discipline.

What good AEO looks like in practice:

  • Answer the question clearly in the first sentences below a heading that contains it.
  • Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons, and add structured data where it fits.
  • Cover the follow-up questions around a topic, ideally in a topic cluster.
  • Show expertise and sources (E-E-A-T).

Measure success with AI citations and snippet visibility, not only with rankings and clicks.
