International SEO

International SEO is the optimization of a website so that search engines show the right language and country version to users in every target market.

What is international SEO?

International SEO is the practice of optimizing a website so that it ranks in several countries and languages – and so that search engines show each user the right version. It builds on classic SEO but adds decisions that only arise when a business targets more than one market.

The core building blocks are:

  • Domain structure: country-code domains (ccTLDs), subdomains or subfolders per market.
  • Language and country signals: hreflang tags, a clear URL structure and consistent internal linking between language versions.
  • Market-specific keyword research: what people search for differs by country, even within the same language (keyword research).
  • Localization: content, currencies, examples and contact details adapted to each market.
  • Local authority: links and brand mentions from sources in each target country.

A common pitfall is treating international SEO as translation. Pages that are only translated rarely match local search behaviour, and versions in the same language for different countries can compete with each other as duplicate content. International SEO also means looking beyond Google where it isn’t dominant – for example Baidu in China.

Today it includes visibility in AI search as well: AI tools answer in the user’s language and draw on sources from that market, so GEO has to be planned per market too.
