Brand Mentions
Brand mentions are references to a brand on other websites, in reviews, forums, social media or AI answers – with or without a link.
What are brand mentions?
Brand mentions are references to your brand, products or people in third-party sources: news sites, blogs, reviews, forums, social media, podcasts or answers from AI assistants. Unlike backlinks, they don’t need a link. An unlinked mention still tells search engines and language models that your brand is relevant to a topic.
For search engines, mentions in reputable sources support authority and trust (E-E-A-T). For AI search they matter even more: language models learn which brands belong to which topics largely from how often, and in what context, they are mentioned across the web. Brands that are discussed widely and consistently are more likely to be named in AI answers – a core goal of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
To build brand mentions:
- Earn coverage in trade media with data, studies and expert commentary.
- Be present where your audience discusses your category: industry forums, review platforms and communities such as Reddit.
- Keep your brand name, descriptions and key facts consistent across all markets and languages.
- Monitor mentions per market and turn unlinked mentions on relevant sites into links where it makes sense.
Internationally, mentions count per market: a strong presence in English-language media does not automatically carry over to Germany or Latin America. Local-language coverage builds visibility where your customers actually search. Being named in an answer is related to, but not the same as, an AI citation.
