Query Fan-Out
Query fan-out is the technique AI search uses to split one question into many sub-queries, search them in parallel and combine the results into one answer.
What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is a technique AI search systems use to answer complex questions. Instead of searching only for the user’s exact wording, the system breaks the question into a series of related sub-queries, runs them in parallel and combines the results into one answer. Google uses it in AI Mode and AI Overviews; ChatGPT search and Perplexity work in a similar way.
For example, for “best CRM for a mid-sized company expanding into Mexico”, the system might separately search for CRM comparisons, Spanish-language support, data protection rules in Mexico, pricing and integrations, and then merge what it finds.
What query fan-out means for SEO:
- Your page can be cited for a sub-query even if it doesn’t rank for the original question.
- Topic coverage matters more than single keywords: content should answer the obvious follow-up questions around a topic.
- Clear sections with descriptive headings make it easier for AI systems to extract the right passage.
For keyword research, this means mapping clusters of related questions per market and language, not just individual search terms – the follow-up questions of a German or Mexican user often differ from those of an American one. Pages that cover these sub-questions well are more likely to earn AI citations.
