AI Citations
AI citations are the sources that AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity link to or name when generating an answer.
What are AI citations?
AI citations are the sources an AI search tool links to or names when it generates an answer. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot all show citations, usually as links next to or below the answer.
A citation is different from a brand mention: a mention means the AI names your brand in its answer; a citation means it uses your page as a source. Both count towards visibility in AI search, and both are key metrics in Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
As more searches end with an AI answer, citations are how a website gains visibility and qualified clicks. Users who click a citation have usually read the summary and know what they are looking for.
How to get cited:
- Rank for the underlying searches: AI tools mostly draw on pages that already perform well in search, often for related sub-questions (query fan-out).
- Give clear, self-contained answers with facts and figures that are easy to quote.
- Keep content current and show expertise and sources (E-E-A-T).
- Make sure AI crawlers can access your pages (robots.txt) and that the content is in the HTML, not only loaded by scripts.
Measuring citations is still difficult. Google Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in its overall performance data without reporting them separately, so many companies track citations with specialized tools or a fixed set of test prompts per market and language.
