Topic Cluster
A topic cluster is a group of pages on one subject: a central pillar page linked to detailed pages on related subtopics.
What is a topic cluster?
A topic cluster is a way of organizing content around a subject rather than individual keywords. It consists of a pillar page that gives a broad overview of a topic and several cluster pages that cover related subtopics in depth. The pillar page links to every cluster page, and each cluster page links back to the pillar and, where it helps, to its siblings (internal linking).
Why topic clusters work:
- Topical authority: a well-covered topic signals expertise to search engines (E-E-A-T).
- Better crawling and context: clear internal links help search engines understand how pages relate.
- AI search: AI tools break questions into sub-questions (query fan-out). A cluster that answers the obvious follow-up questions has more chances of being cited.
- Less cannibalization: each page gets a clear job, which prevents several pages from competing for the same search (keyword cannibalization).
To build one, start from keyword research: group related searches by search intent, choose the pillar topic and plan one cluster page per distinct subtopic.
For international websites, plan clusters per market. Subtopics and follow-up questions often differ by country, so a cluster that works in English may need different cluster pages in German or Spanish.
