Zero-Click Search

A zero-click search is a search that ends on the results page without a click on any website, because the answer is already shown there.

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking through to a website, because the results page already answers the question. Typical answer formats are featured snippets, knowledge panels, weather, currency or time boxes, local map results – and increasingly AI-generated answers such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Studies estimate that more than half of all Google searches in the US and the EU now end without a click. The share is highest for quick factual and informational queries and much lower for complex, commercial and transactional searches.

What it means for businesses:

  • Rankings no longer equal traffic. A page can rank well and still receive fewer clicks, so measure impressions and visibility alongside visits.
  • Visibility moves onto the results page. Being the source of a snippet or an AI citation, and having your brand named, builds awareness even without a click.
  • Content strategy shifts. Simple definitions are easily answered on the SERP; in-depth guides, tools, data and comparisons still earn clicks.

Zero-click search is one of the main reasons why Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) has become part of modern SEO strategies.
