Performance Max
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that uses AI to show ads across all Google channels – Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps – from a single campaign.
What is Performance Max?
Performance Max (often shortened to PMax) is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type introduced in 2021. From a single campaign, it serves ads across all of Google’s channels: Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Google’s AI decides where, when and to whom ads are shown, and automatically combines your assets into ads for each format.
Advertisers provide:
- Goals and budget: A conversion goal, optionally with a target CPA or a target ROAS.
- Assets: Headlines, descriptions, images, logos and videos, organized in asset groups.
- Audience signals: Hints such as customer lists or interests that help the AI find the right people faster.
- Product feed (for retailers): Via Google Merchant Center, for Shopping ads.
Performance Max can reach new audiences efficiently, but it offers less control and transparency than classic campaigns. It depends heavily on accurate conversion tracking: if the AI optimizes for the wrong signal, it will scale the wrong results. Many advertisers therefore run it alongside dedicated search campaigns and use brand exclusions to protect branded search.
For international advertisers, it is usually best to create separate campaigns per country and language, each with localized assets, landing pages and product feeds.
